Thank goodness our dinner’s sorted

I like cooking. It’s the second-best part of dinner time – the eating is number one, of course. But instead of enjoying my time in the kitchen, the looming mealtime hangs over my head like a cloud. I dread the thought of the kids standing at my feet, Millie crying that she’s “soooo hungry”, while I stand with both the fridge and pantry open, hoping some inspiration – or better still, Jamie Oliver – will jump out at me.

Roll up, roll up! It’s Show time!

The Royal Melbourne Show was the highlight of my year as a child. My brother and I would have circled the showbags we wanted from the newspaper’s Show Guide – never missing out on the Bertie Beetle bag – and be bursting with excitement about the day’s adventure. The photographs taken each year of us in the Animal Nursery are among our most treasured for capturing a moment in time. At the Show I feel like a kid again – but it’s quite surreal that I’ll be taking my own children to the showgrounds this year. And I can’t wait.

How the West has won

It’s getting a little trickier and takes quite a bit more planning, but Millie and I still enjoy regular mum and daughter shopping trips.

Ok, I enjoy it and my money is almost always spent on the tiniest member of the house, but we have happily navigated our way around some of Melbourne’s best shopping precincts.

But a Monday tour through Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong showed me there was lots to keep both Millie and I entertained as well as some shops where we could each find some treats to carry home.
